I'm a photographer and social entrepreneur. I travel, with my partner, in Thailand and Laos, where we buy naturally dyed, natural fibre textiles (hand-reeled silks and cottons, organic whenever we can find them) directly from rural women's weaving groups, using fair trade principles. Our business: TAMMACHAT Natural Textiles. "Tammachat" means natural or from the dharma, in Thai.
Do you practice green living? If yes, how?
You bet, we practice green living. We grow most of our own vegetables organically and buy the rest mostly from local, organic farmers. At home, we keep our environmental footprint as light as possible, buying biomass (wood) for heat in our rural house. When we travel in Southeast Asia, we take public transportation, or use bicycles or small motorcycles to get around. We stay in only accommodations where we use fans, not air conditioning, for cooling. We buy local as much as possible, whether that means in our own rural province or by buying the Thai weavers' own local, silk.
What are your favorite eco-friendly products, places to hang out or shop in, and/or web sites?
Of course, our own website is our favourite! www.tammachat.com. We've got an online shop with select pieces so we can make them available beyond our local area.
LIFE is LIVING is a national campaign that utilizes a new form of green spoken storytelling — one that represents the diverse and changing perspectives on what it means to be environmentally just. For more information, visit http://www.lifeisliving.org. Please support their efforts.
